What this is
The Bank of Canada publishes one USD/CAD observation per business day. It is not a continuous market rate and it is not the rate your bank will give you. It is the reference figure, and it is the one worth quoting.

A rising rate means a weaker loonie — US freight pays more in CAD, but US parts and equipment cost more. A falling rate is the reverse. Work out what a lane costs

Why a diesel dashboard publishes a currency

A Canadian carrier running into the United States buys fuel in two currencies and gets paid in one. A cent on the exchange rate moves the cost of a US fill as surely as a cent on the pump price does, and the two rarely move together.

This page carries the Bank of Canada observation and its date. We publish the observation date rather than the fetch time because they are different things, and conflating them once put a six-week-old rate on this dashboard for thirty days. That correction is documented on the methodology page.
